I battled with the bottle
And I argued with God
I wrestled with the demons
And the misery they brought.
Sat alone in a room
Hoping for a quick end
With a bullet in the drawer
And a gun in my hand.
No matter where I traveled
Couldn’t find a home
Trouble always finds me
No matter where I go.
Can’t wash it off with water
Can’t burn it in the fire
All the devils stood back
Appalled at my desires.
Cause there ain't no pill
No drink or drug
No pretty girls kneeling down
With promises of real love.
To cure my disease
Or to give me peace
That would clear my head
Make me what I used to be.
Feeling less human
More like an animal
Feasting on the flesh
Cassinova, part cannibal.
Life twisted up, messed up
More and more
I couldn’t put my feet upon
This cold linoleum floor.
Didn’t want to hear the music
Cause I hated that sound
It reminded me of days
When I was stronger, not now.

Haint
Posted on March 11, 2011
She said my love was perfect
No greater could be found
I swore her kiss lay heavy
And pinned me to the ground.
Her voice was like hot butter
Songs rolled right off her tongue
Her stories told of forests
Of men with dogs and guns.
We watched the night together
She heard the mournful hounds
But neither man or animal
Could make those beastly sounds.
She felt a haint was present
She smelled a dying breeze
It stood on solid earth here
Where hell and heaven meet.
She ventured to the edge
Discovered footprints bare
She tracked it to the muddy end
But vanished in mid-air.
She froze quite still and shaken
A young girl’s memory scared
Her back into our cabin
To tend to supper there.
Her dreams were plagued by spirits
She reached above the sink
And mixed a drink of bitters
That dulled her nerves to sleep.
Her mind was like the daybreak fog
October’s chill had brought
She did not trust her instincts
Could not control her thoughts.
She [...]

I watched the skies for dawn to break
My heart it will not heal
For what I seen this midnight hour
I pray I don't shoot the way I feel.
No mercy, pardon, no law up here
Where the crime is, let the great axe fall
For what I’ve seen. no nightmare dream
I knew I’d seen something that made my skin crawl.
The sheriff does not know my face
He does not know my hand
But when the moon comes up tonight
He’ll know just who I am.
Some men have no sense of rule
What the eye sees it wants
And some men have no boundaries
No matter what the cost.
I know he prays the law will find him
Before the kinfolk do
I shudder at what fate awaits
Before his day is through.
Lustful evil, disease of mind
Rooted there and grew
He fantasized of younger skin
That he could subdue.
I stroked the barrel on my lap
I wondered at its power
And I wondered how his face would look
In his final hour.
But rifles are for long distance kills
Triggers [...]

he run stop signs
one two many times
the cop chased him
to the Indiana line
nobody stopped
in hot pursuit
open liquor
Jameson booze
he knew the land
and all the back roads
he drove in places
where the law wouldn't go
he turned off his lights
in those hills and hollers
drove from memory
where the cops wouldn't follow.
it was in his nature
written in his DNA
like his daddy and grandpa
now this first born son
and this blood don't run.
stopped at a cousin's
with a mean dead husband
drove by his ma's
she pretended she was gone
raced by his brother's
when he heard the thunder
of the warning shot
pretending or not
he was gone daddy gone
with his spiritual guide
little toy Jesus Lord
wavin' on the dashboard
he honked his horn
at the tall green corn
somewhere outside
near the Dugger town line.
running like a rabbit
it was just a bad habit
he don't give a fuck about
about well-aimed guns
or shiny star badges
on overweight state lackies
drinking cold red [...]
